Standing for local office is a vital part of Scotland’s democracy, but it can also bring challenges, particularly around personal safety, online abuse, and wellbeing.
The Safer Politics Toolkit is designed to support current and prospective candidates by offering practical guidance on campaigning safely and confidently.
The toolkit provides advice on managing risks, responding to intimidation or harassment, and protecting yourself both online and offline. It also signposts support organisations and resources to help you navigate difficult situations.
By promoting a safer, more respectful political environment, the toolkit aims to ensure that everyone can participate in local democracy and represent their communities without fear.
The Safer Politics project has been produced by the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Digital Politics, Media and Democracy (DigiPol) in co-operation with the Local Government Association and the Jo Cox Foundation and with funding from Research England.
